The Shocking Prevalence of Birth Injuries

Actor Sylvester Stallone is known for his signature crooked smile. So much so, that when they were casting his son for Rocky Balboa, the directors looked for a young man who had the same smirk. They ended up selecting up-and-coming actor Milo Ventimiglia.

What most people don’t know is that both of these men have similar reasons for having a crooked smile. Ventimiglia was born with nerve damage on the left side of his face. Stallone also has nerve damage around his mouth, but it is not congenital. When he was born, the doctors struggled during the process and had to use forceps.

Well, they misused the forceps and caused a lasting injury that followed this actor throughout his life. Although these injuries weren’t deadly, they did impact Stallone’s career and livelihood. Sometimes, though, malpractice in the delivery room can have much more dangerous impacts on an infant.

Mishandling a baby is one of the most common reasons infants are injured when they are born. A delivery room is hectic with the woman giving birth and her family all crowded around her. Not to mention the doctor and nurses running around to make sure the mother and child are happy and healthy.

With all of this hustle and bustle, it’s no surprise that a few wrong actions doctors or nurses can seriously injure a child. If the person handling the newborn loses focus for even a few seconds, catastrophic injuries can occur.

Because the newborn’s body is so weak and they lack the awareness to protect themselves, the baby is incredibly susceptible to injuries. Cerebral palsy and spinal cord injuries are just a couple of injuries that can change a child’s life in one second.

In addition to the actual physical handling of the child, there are other things that can lead to injury or death of a newborn. After the baby is born, the doctors will run a few tests to make sure that the parents have a healthy child. These include blood tests and other measures that check the health of the newborn. Most of the time, the doctor is able to catch any issues before they get out of hand.

However, according to Chapman Injury Lawyers, a large amount of fetal death can be caused by failing to catch certain birth defects. It’s heartbreaking to see a new family destroyed by a doctor who failed to notice certain treatable anomalies. When this happens, the family has to pay even more in medical expenses than they would have had to if the doctor had noticed the problems right off the bat.

If the defect is severe enough, the family also has to pay for funeral and burial expenses. The family will already have to rebuild their lives when such a tragedy occurs, it would be a travesty to expect them to pay for it on their own.

The practicing doctor must be held accountable for their malpractice so that something like this never happens again. If you find yourself in such a terrible situation, find a law office who will help you in your time of need so you can heal properly.
